Honda advances hydrogen strategy with new fuel cell module

Honda's next generation fuel cell module

Honda Motor Co., Ltd. has revealed specifications for its Next Generation Fuel Cell Module and Fuel Cell Power Generator at the H2 & FC Expo in Tokyo. The company announced that mass production of the fuel cell module is scheduled to begin in fiscal year 2027, while the power generator will enter production in 2026.

The new fuel cell module, developed independently by Honda following previous collaboration with General Motors, achieves a rated output of 150 kW while cutting production costs by half compared to the current model. The module also more than doubles durability and increases volumetric power density by more than three times, significantly reducing its size and enhancing installation flexibility.

“By further expanding domains for application of the system and sales regions of this next-generation fuel cell module, Honda is striving to make a greater contribution to the realization of a sustainable, energy-oriented society,” the company stated.

Honda’s Fuel Cell Power Generator, a stationary power storage system using the same fuel cell technology found in the Honda CR-V e:FCEV, is designed to provide clean hydrogen-derived electricity to large facilities such as factories and offices. The generator features a compact design with optimized cooling systems and internal layout for flexible installation. It also boasts high responsiveness, supplying power within 10 seconds of startup.

Honda has been researching hydrogen technologies for over 30 years and has identified four core domains for its fuel cell system application: fuel cell electric vehicles, commercial vehicles, stationary power generators, and construction machinery. The company views hydrogen as a key element in achieving its goal of carbon neutrality across all products and corporate activities by 2050.
