The Future Hybrid Concept unit is a compact powertrain designed to hybridize BEV platforms with minimal modifications.

Horse Powertrain has revealed its new Future Hybrid Concept at Auto Shanghai 2025, presenting a compact hybrid powertrain designed to fit within existing EV platforms.

The system integrates an internal combustion engine, electric motor, and transmission into a single unit that can replace the front electric drive of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) with minimal modifications. The company claims this will allow automakers to offer hybrid options on their electric platforms without major redesigns.

“Horse Powertrain is focused on solving the biggest problems facing automotive OEMs,” said CEO Matias Giannini. “For over a decade it looked like BEVs were the only path to net zero, and OEMs planned accordingly. However, we’re now shifting towards a technology-neutral world, with different markets and applications each pursuing their own sustainable mobility journey.”

The system functions as a range extender for the existing battery and enables all-wheel drive operation in both electric and hybrid modes. According to the company, it supports multiple fuel types including gasoline, ethanol, methanol, and synthetic fuels.

“The Future Hybrid Concept is designing as a single-piece combustion engine, motor, and transmission unit, reducing the complexity of a hybrid powertrain,” said Chief Engineer of xHEV systems, Ragnar Burenius. “This allows more flexibility for its packaging, allowing for it to be integrated in existing BEV platforms with minimal modifications to the vehicle.”

The system includes necessary power electronics and an 800V charging booster. Its design accommodates next-generation automotive heat pumps and newer refrigerants.

Horse Powertrain operates 17 manufacturing plants and five R&D centers globally with 19,000 employees. The company plans for vehicles using the Future Hybrid Concept to reach roads by 2028.
