Iveco partners with Astra to launch high-performance CNG truck

This Iveco S-Way CNG was designed and developed in secret and is a one-off

Iveco has launched the S-Way 500 CNG 6×2 in partnership with Astra Vehicle Technologies, introducing a truck capable of 44 tonnes gross vehicle weight with CO2 reductions of up to 95% compared to equivalent diesel models. The vehicle made its debut at the 2025 Road Transport Expo with a custom-designed display model featuring hand-painted artwork.

The truck is powered by Iveco’s xCursor 13 engine, which produces 500 horsepower and represents what the company describes as the most powerful CNG engine currently available in the commercial vehicle market. The vehicle incorporates eight CNG tanks positioned within the chassis framework, allowing for maximum trailer lengths while providing sufficient biomethane storage for journeys exceeding 500 kilometers.

Key technical features include aerodynamic bodywork with MirrorCam technology, which Iveco states can deliver fuel savings of up to 1.5% through reduced drag while improving driver visibility compared to traditional mirrors. The vehicle also incorporates a high performance engine brake that is 30% more effective than previous versions and can substitute for a retarder in most operational scenarios.

The truck includes predictive cruise control technology that uses topographical data to optimize vehicle performance, along with low rolling resistance tires designed to improve efficiency. Interior features include a customizable digital driver display and 10-inch infotainment system with the same functionality found across Iveco’s Way range.

The exhibition model features distinctive green and black exterior design elements, contrasting interior embroidery, Alcantara materials, and optional rear storage compartments. The vehicle carries the personalized registration X8 CNG, referencing its eight-tank CNG system.

“The reduction in emissions across fleets is a serious business, and so this statement-making vehicle represents much more than a bespoke show truck,” said Iveco business director Mike Cutts. “Underpinning this vehicle is the same unmatched Iveco S-Way CNG 6×2 that is revolutionising renewable fleet capabilities. It’s a product we are proud of, and clearly one that is worthy of an attention-grabbing persona.”

The S-Way 500 CNG 6×2 forms part of Iveco’s broader alternative fuel strategy, which the company positions as addressing both environmental regulations and total cost of ownership considerations for fleet operators. The vehicle is designed for multi-mission capabilities while maintaining the operational flexibility required for various transport applications.

At the Road Transport Expo, Iveco also displayed the all-electric S-eWay making its UK public debut, an eDaily equipped with an ePTO-powered VR truck racing simulator, the Eurocargo CNG, X-Way, and the flagship S-Way 580 model.
