Kia Corporation revealed its new PV5 WAV (Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle) at the Financial Times’ Future of the Car Summit in London, showcasing the model in partnership with UK-based Motability Operations Ltd. The vehicle represents Kia’s latest advancement in providing mobility solutions for people with disabilities.
“The PV5 WAV is more than just a vehicle; it’s a gateway to independence and freedom for those with mobility challenges,” said Sangdae Kim, Executive Vice President and Head of PBV Division at Kia. “By integrating cutting-edge Platform Beyond Vehicle technology with thoughtful design, we are paving the way for a future where everyone can enjoy the benefits of sustainable mobility.”
The development of Kia’s electric WAV comes in response to increasing global demand for accessible vehicles, driven by aging populations and expanded transport services for people with disabilities. As traditional internal combustion engine vehicles typically converted into WAVs are phased out, electric alternatives become increasingly important.
The PV5 WAV features a side-entry system allowing wheelchair users to board safely from the sidewalk, with a third-row tip-up seat enabling caregivers to assist passengers from the side. The vehicle includes a quick-use, 300kg-rated wheelchair entry ramp and a specially developed wheelchair belt fastening system.
Kia will manufacture the PV5 WAV entirely at its Hwaseong EVO Plant in Korea using the company’s Made-In-Plant system, with production processes designed to be environmentally sustainable.
Beyond hardware innovations, the vehicle will integrate applications specifically designed for individuals with disabilities, based on the Android Automotive Operating System (AAOS) open software platform.
Kia announced its collaboration with Motability Operations during Kia EV Day in February 2025. Motability, the largest vehicle leasing company in the UK, operates the Motability Scheme, which provides affordable accessible vehicles to qualifying disability allowance recipients. The scheme helps connect disabled customers to work, healthcare, education, and greater independence.
Following its UK introduction through Motability, Kia plans to expand its PV5 WAV to additional global markets, continuing the company’s 13-year history of initiatives aimed at enhancing mobility for people with disabilities.
