Mazda’s Jinba Ittai philosophy applied to EV design with its new electric hatchback

The all-new Mazda6e was unveiled at the Brussels Motor Show.

Mazda has announced the all-new Mazda6e, an electric five-door hatchback that transfers the company’s Jinba Ittai (“horse and rider as one”) driving philosophy to EVs. The model, set to arrive in UK showrooms in 2026, offers rear-wheel drive performance with two electric powertrain options.

Engineers from Japan and Germany have refined the vehicle specifically for European markets, focusing on steering, suspension, and pedal calibration to create what Mazda describes as a “harmonious and reassuring driving feel.”

The Mazda6e will be available with either a 258PS or 245PS electric powertrain, both delivering 320Nm of torque. The vehicle features a multi-link rear suspension and balanced 50:50 weight distribution to enhance handling characteristics. A rear spoiler automatically deploys at 60mph to increase downforce and improve high-speed stability.

Three drive modes allow drivers to customize their experience. Normal mode balances range and performance with standard steering resistance and regenerative braking for everyday driving. Sport mode provides stronger acceleration and increased steering resistance for a more dynamic feel. Individual mode enables personalization of acceleration strength, regenerative braking (with four available levels), and steering resistance.

The cabin layout emphasizes driver focus, with ergonomically designed seats intended for comfort during longer journeys. The integrated brake control system enables smooth transitions between acceleration, braking, and cornering to enhance both stability and ride comfort.

Mazda’s Jinba Ittai philosophy, which aims to create a seamless connection between car and driver, has been central to the company’s vehicle development for decades. The term, has traditionally defined Mazda’s approach to internal combustion vehicles, particularly the MX-5 roadster.

With the Mazda6e, the company is attempting to transfer this driving experience to the electric era while maintaining what it considers its distinctive driving characteristics. The vehicle represents Mazda’s most significant step toward electrification in its mainstream lineup, following the limited-production MX-30.
