Proterra's new battery pack provides an optimal balance of range, durability, and performance.

Proterra Powered LLC has introduced its new H2-23 battery pack designed for Class 8 trucks and other commercial vehicle applications. The product was unveiled at the ACT Expo as part of the company’s new Onyx Strata series.

The H2-23 battery pack features a gravimetric density of 176 Wh/kg and volumetric density of 270 Wh/L, supporting a 750kWh energy system for Class 8 applications and up to 2MWh of total system energy. The battery pack includes software compliant with SAE J1939 and ISO26262 standards and enhanced security features.

Developed to power large commercial vehicles, the battery system aims to provide sufficient range and durability for heavy-duty trucking operations. The technology will be displayed in multiple OEM vehicles throughout the ACT Expo.

“The new H2-23 battery pack represents more than just a technological advancement – it embodies our renewed focus on powering the shift to a sustainable future,” said Claire McConnell, Chief Business Officer at Proterra. “We’ve created a solution that delivers unparalleled performance even in the most challenging conditions. Every mile driven with our technology helps bring our customers closer to their zero-emission goals.”

Alongside the H2-23 launch, Proterra introduced its broader Onyx Series, which includes two platforms. The Onyx Slate features single-layer battery configurations for longer, larger commercial vehicles with flexible installation options below or within frame rails and roof-mounted positions. The Onyx Strata offers compact battery configurations designed for maximizing energy storage in limited spaces for both on-highway and off-highway applications.

The new battery systems represent part of the ongoing technological development in the commercial vehicle electrification sector, as manufacturers work to create viable alternatives to traditional diesel-powered trucks and equipment for industrial applications.
