Volvo Cars Superset tech stack.

Volvo Cars unveiled a revolutionary approach to technology during its Capital Markets Day in Gothenburg, Sweden. The company announced a new strategy that will focus on creating cars that improve over time, utilizing a unified core system called the Volvo Cars Superset tech stack.

Starting with the EX90, Volvo’s future EVs will be built upon this single tech and software base, which contains all modules and functionalities for their upcoming product lineup. This modular approach allows for various configurations across different models while ensuring continuous improvement of the core technology.

“The Volvo Cars Superset tech stack is a true game changer,” said Anders Bell, Chief Engineering and Technology Officer at Volvo Cars, “It allows all of our engineering effort to be channeled into one single direction that powers all our products, instead of working on specific car projects.”

The company is implementing a closed-loop development process based on data, connectivity, software, and core computing. This shift to core computing is considered as significant as the transition to electrification, impacting all aspects of the cars’ electrical systems.

Volvo also introduced its next-generation SPA3 platform, which will be underpinned by the Superset tech stack. The first vehicle to be built on this platform will be the forthcoming all-electric EX60 mid-size SUV. SPA3 builds upon the previous SPA2 platform, featuring enhanced core computing capabilities and improved scalability.

The modularity and upgradeability of SPA3 are expected to lead to lower investment costs and reduced variance in relation to sales, potentially resulting in stronger future cash flow for the company.

This new technological approach represents a significant shift in Volvo’s engineering philosophy, aiming to deliver continuously improving vehicles to customers while streamlining the development process. By focusing on a single, adaptable tech stack, Volvo Cars is positioning itself at the forefront of automotive innovation in the electric era.
