The California eHybrid 4MOTION is the first camper van with plug-in hybrid all-wheel drive.

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has introduced new plug-in hybrid all-wheel drive variants of its Multivan and California models, offering enhanced electric capability and improved range.

The new eHybrid 4MOTION system delivers 180 kW (245 PS) through a combination of a 1.5 TSI evo2 four-cylinder engine and two electric motors – one on each axle. A new 19.7 kWh lithium-ion battery provides electric ranges of up to 95 kilometers for the Multivan and 91 kilometers for the California.

The powertrain features a 130 kW (177 PS) petrol engine working alongside an 85 kW (115 PS) electric motor on the front axle and a 100 kW (136 PS) motor on the rear axle. The system generates 350 Nm of torque and incorporates a specially developed DSG transmission.

Charging capabilities have been significantly upgraded, with AC charging now possible at up to 11kW, compared to 3.6kW in previous models. The vehicles can also charge at DC rapid charging stations at up to 50kW – a first for these models.

Both vehicles start in pure electric mode at temperatures above -28 degrees Celsius, with all-wheel drive engagement up to 65 km/h. The power distribution between axles is managed by Electronic Stability Control, allowing up to 100% of drive force to be directed to either axle as needed.

The vehicles achieve a top speed of 130 km/h in electric mode and 200 km/h in hybrid mode. They feature electric stationary air conditioning, which can operate via the battery or shore power during charging.

Pricing starts at 70,668.15 euros for the standard-length Multivan eHybrid 4MOTION. The California eHybrid 4MOTION, which comes with an extended body and pop-up roof with two sleeping berths, starts at 77,772.45 euros. A version with additional interior sleeping berths begins at 82,907.30 euros.

Both models will be manufactured at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ Hanover plant in Germany, alongside the electric ID. Buzz. The vehicles are now available to order across Europe.
