Hyundai Motor’s XCIENT Fuel Cell Class-8 heavy-duty truck fleet recorded 20 million kilometers of driving across Europe, as of January 2026.

Hyundai Motor’s XCIENT Fuel Cell heavy-duty truck fleet has reached 20 million kilometers driven across five European countries, with 165 units in operation. A further 63 trucks in North America have accumulated approximately 1.6 million kilometers since 2023.

Seoul-based Hyundai Motor Company says its XCIENT Fuel Cell Class-8 heavy-duty truck fleet has now accumulated 20 million kilometers of driving across Europe, a figure reached in January 2026.

The fleet comprises 165 fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) trucks operating across Switzerland, Germany, France, the Netherlands, and Austria. First deployed in Switzerland in October 2020, the trucks reached 10 million cumulative kilometers in that country alone by June 2024.

In North America, a further 63 XCIENT Fuel Cell trucks have collectively covered approximately 1.6 million kilometers since their introduction to the region in 2023.

“Hyundai Motor is reducing tailpipe carbon emissions by working with global partners to deploy hydrogen fuel cell trucks across various sectors such as logistics, distribution and urban public operations,” says Chul Youn Park, head of global commercial vehicle and light commercial vehicle business division at Hyundai Motor Company. “Starting with our initial operations in Switzerland, we have expanded our presence across multiple regions in Europe while achieving visible progress in North America as well.”

Park adds that the company’s hydrogen commercial vehicles “continue to demonstrate their value as mobility solutions for a more advanced future, helping build the hydrogen ecosystem and expanding their global impact.”

The European fleet operates across a range of applications. In Switzerland, the trucks serve food, beverage, and clothing logistics. In Germany, they support supermarket chains, textile companies, and fleet operators, while in France they are used for retail chain logistics alongside refuse and crane trucks fitted with electric power take-off (ePTO) solutions. A tarpaulin truck has been supplied to a construction materials distributor in the Netherlands, and a reefer van is integrated into supermarket chain operations in Austria.

Hyundai launched an updated XCIENT Fuel Cell truck in 2025 featuring an upgraded hydrogen fuel cell system. The company says the vehicle underwent testing from 2021 across various climates and use cases, including port transportation and medium-distance logistics.

In North America, the largest deployment is the NorCAL ZERO Project, which operates 30 XCIENT Fuel Cell trucks at the Ports of Oakland in California. In Georgia, 21 trucks support logistics at Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America under the HTWO Logistics initiative with GLOVIS America. Additional trucks are deployed in British Columbia, Canada, as part of the BC Hydrogen Ports Project.
