Cummins’ Accelera to expand battery-electric manufacturing in Spain

Cummins' Accelera is opening a Spain plant to build its 102 kWh, 840V LFP battery for electric buses and trucks.

Cummins and its Accelera by Cummins business are expanding battery manufacturing in Europe with a new plant in Spain to build the Advanced LFP battery platform, a modular 102 kWh, up-to-840V system for buses and trucks. Accelera is also developing the eULFA and 14Xe electric axles for commercial vehicles.

Cummins Inc., headquartered in Columbus, Indiana, and its Accelera by Cummins business have announced plans to expand battery manufacturing in Europe with a new facility in Spain.

The plant will produce Cummins’ Advanced LFP (lithium iron phosphate) battery platform, a modular system with 102 kWh of energy capacity and up to 840V, built on a cell-to-pack architecture the company says is designed for long service life, safety and flexible integration. The batteries are aimed at commercial vehicle applications including buses and trucks.

According to Amy Davis, president of Accelera and Components at Cummins, “We’re seeing growing demand for battery-electric solutions in the European commercial vehicle market, and our customers are looking for partners who can help them scale with confidence.” She adds, “Manufacturing in Spain strengthens our ability to support customers locally, while positioning us for long-term growth in the region.”

Accelera is also developing two electric axle systems for commercial vehicles. The eULFA (electric ultra-low floor axle), designed for low-floor city and transit buses, integrates two electric motors and inverters with a single coolant circuit and a single-plane helical gear design, and is engineered to reduce noise and vibration at speeds of up to 85 km/h for standard city buses and 105 km/h for advanced transit applications.

The 14Xe eAxle, aimed at medium- and heavy-duty commercial vehicles, is available with a two- or three-speed twin countershaft or two-speed planetary transmission, and integrates with Accelera’s ELFA 3 high-power inverter. Cummins says the design reduces the need for wheel-end reductions.

Alongside its electric-drive portfolio, Cummins is expanding its Cummins HELM™ engine platforms, which support multiple fuel types including diesel and natural gas. New additions include the B7.2 medium-duty engine, delivering 179 to 260 kW (240 to 350 hp) and up to 1,350 Nm of torque, and the X10, delivering up to 338 kW (454 hp) and 2,240 Nm of torque, both engineered to meet Euro 7 emissions standards. Cummins is also introducing the X15N heavy-duty natural gas engine to Europe, rated at 485 kW (650 hp) and 3,000 Nm of peak torque.

According to Brett Merritt, president of Cummins’ Engine Business, “Our customers need solutions that help them succeed today, while preparing for the future.” He adds, “Whether customers are focused on improving performance, lowering total cost of ownership or advancing their decarbonization goals, we’re committed to helping them navigate the path forward with confidence.”

Cummins also offers a range of drivetrain and emissions components, including the Meritor® 17X HE Class 8 single rear drive axle, the MIS-09 ProTec™ Independent Front Suspension for buses, and the U-Module aftertreatment system designed to meet Euro 7, NS-VII and BS-VII emissions regulations.

Cummins operates through five business segments — Engine, Components, Distribution, Power Systems and Accelera by Cummins — and employs approximately 67,400 people worldwide. The company reported $33.7 billion in sales in 2025.
