Volkswagen’s ID R Pikes Peak to target electric car record

Volkswagen’s all-electric racer, the ID R Pikes Peak, will take on the famed ascent of its namesake in June with the aim of breaking the electric car record for the Colorado Springs route.

The electrically powered super sports car generates 500kW (680ps) of power, 650Nm of torque, and weighs less than 1,100kg. The car’s 0-100km/h sprint time of 2.25 seconds will be vital in Volkswagen’s attempt to break the existing record of 8:57.118 minutes.

The vehicle uses lithium-ion batteries, and approximately 20% of the electric energy required for the 20km route is generated while on the move. During braking, the electric motors act as generators, converting some of the braking energy into electricity that is fed into the battery.
