Toyota has unveiled the Aygo X Hybrid, marking the introduction of full hybrid technology to the A-segment city car category. Set to go on sale in the UK and parts of Europe from late 2025, the new model is expected to offer the lowest CO₂ emissions of any non-plug-in vehicle on the market, with a projected 86g/km under WLTP standards.
The Aygo X Hybrid is produced in Europe and builds on the popularity of the current Aygo X, which has sold over 287,000 units since its 2022 debut. The hybrid system, already in use in Toyota’s Yaris and Yaris Cross models, replaces the outgoing 1.0-litre petrol engine. Total power output increases to 114bhp, enabling acceleration from 0–62mph in under 10 seconds.
Toyota engineers reconfigured the battery layout to preserve the car’s compact dimensions, placing two stacks of cells longitudinally under the rear seats. Boot space remains at 231 litres, while the vehicle’s wheelbase stays at 2,430mm. The front overhang has been extended by 76mm to accommodate the hybrid system.
Design changes include a new grille, bonnet, and headlight configuration, with 17- or 18-inch wheels and a bi-tone paint option. The GR Sport grade, a first for Aygo X, brings performance-focused tuning and exclusive design features such as a black bonnet, G-pattern grille mesh, and GR-branded details.
Interior updates include a 7-inch digital combimeter, electronic parking brake, USB-C ports, and new seat upholstery materials. Higher grades will offer a wireless phone charger, nanoeX air purification, and powered mirrors. Safety equipment includes the latest Toyota Safety Sense package with enhanced driver assistance systems and over-the-air update capability.
Toyota claims the Aygo X Hybrid will reduce lifecycle CO₂ emissions by 18% compared to its predecessor, helped by changes in materials, manufacturing, and logistics. The model is manufactured in Kolin, Czech Republic, at a facility powered by renewable energy.
Full UK specifications and pricing are to be announced closer to launch.
