Volvo ushers in new era of electric SUVs with its EX90

Born smart and connected with Google built­in, the EX90 is equipped with a range of sensors, including radars, cameras and lidar.

Volvo Cars has begun shipping its highly anticipated all-electric EX90 SUV to retailers in the United States and Europe, with the first customers expected to receive their vehicles by the end of the month. The Swedish automaker plans to expand deliveries to additional markets between Q4 2024 and Q1 2025.

According to Volvo, the EX90 represents a significant leap forward in safety, sustainability, and human-centric technology. CEO Jim Rowan recently put the vehicle through its paces on a 950-kilometer road trip across three U.S. states.

“Based on this trip, I can confidently say that the EX90 is the best car we have ever made,” said Rowan. “The charging, the handling, the ride comfort, the silence of the cabin and the epic sound system, the reliability, the tech and the feel of the UI – I’ve never driven a Volvo car like it.”

Built on Volvo’s next-generation technology base, the EX90 boasts a driving range of up to 600km and incorporates advanced sensors, including lidar, for enhanced safety. The vehicle’s core system, powered by Nvidia Drive platform and Qualcomm Technologies’ Snapdragon Cockpit Platform, enables seamless integration of key functions and over-the-air updates.

“The Volvo EX90 embodies our future as a fully electric car maker, with cars that continuously get better over time thanks to core computing and software updates,” said Rowan.

Production of the EX90 commenced earlier this year at Volvo’s manufacturing plant near Charleston, South Carolina. The facility, which has undergone extensive renovations and expansion, now has the capacity to produce up to 150,000 cars annually.

As Volvo’s first vehicle designed for bi-directional charging, the EX90 aims to contribute to a more balanced power grid and increased use of renewable energy. It also debuts the world’s first Abbey Road Studios mode in its optional Bowers & Wilkins audio system, further cementing its position as a technological pioneer in the automotive industry.
