Kia launched the compact EV2, its entry-level electric model, with 42.2kWh or 61kWh battery options offering up to 278 miles range. Built in Slovakia for European markets, it features sub-30-minute rapid charging, 22kW AC charging capability, and comprehensive ADAS technology as standard.
Hot on the heels of the EV5 and PV5 models, Kia has further added to its EV range with the smaller model yet, the EV2.
Available with two battery options of either 42.2kWh or 61.0lWh, the EV2 aims to attract more customers from the B segment who are looking for an ICE alternative to the brand. It also provides an entry point to Kia’s battery electric range, in a car that is compact but spacious, versatile and technologically well-equipped.
Ho Sung Song, CEO of Kia, hailed the EV2 as ‘an important milestone’ for the brand, as well as big opportunity for Kia to repeat success that it has had with other models, in the B-segment.
“The Kia EV2 represents a significant step in making electric mobility accessible to a broader audience”, added Soohang Chang, president and CEO, Kia Europe. “As our most compact EV, it blends bold design with cutting-edge advancements in charging, connectivity, and safety. Building the EV2 in Slovakia reinforces our commitment to Europe and ensures this model reflects the needs and expectations of drivers across the continent.”
From a design perspective, there is a distant similarity with the larger EV3, such as vertical daytime running lights, robust wheel arches and a pronounced shoulder line. Inside, drivers will find a spacious cabin, a wraparound dashboard and an array of physical buttons that are ordered according to their frequency of use.
With the 42.2kWh standard range battery, drivers can expect to get up to 197 miles, while EV2s equipped with the larger pack will offer as many as 278 miles (WLTP pending).
Both models will feature 400V charging architecture, which provides rapid charging, with sub-30 minute times quotes for replenishing the battery from 10 to 80%. Meanwhile, for the first time, Kia is offering from launch both 11kW and 22kW AC charging in the EV2. This development, says the Korean brand, is in response to the maturing charging infrastructure across Europe, adding that it will bring ‘greater flexibility’ for home and public charging.
Despite being the entry-level model in the EV range, the EV2 will boast a wealth of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and connectivity features. For example, the B-segment BEV will come with the latest versions of Kia’s smart cruise control, driving assist and collision avoidance technologies as standard. In addition, there is full support for the Kia App, a digital key using NFC and over the air updates.
