SAIC has opened pre-orders in China for the MG 4X, a B-segment electric SUV available with a 64.2 kWh semi-solid manganese-based lithium-ion battery delivering 530 km CLTC range, from 99,800 yuan (~$14,700). The same battery, branded MG SolidCore, will launch in Europe by the end of 2026.
SAIC has opened blind pre-orders in China for the MG 4X, a B-segment electric SUV available with a semi-solid-state battery option, with starting prices from 99,800 yuan (approximately US$14,700).
The 4X, unveiled in March, extends the MG4 platform — which SAIC described last year as the world’s first mass-produced semi-solid-state EV — into a higher-riding crossover body. Pre-orders opened on May 11, with an official launch scheduled for the end of May. Production ramp-up is targeted for the end of the second quarter of 2026.
Filings published by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology confirm two battery options for the model. The standard variant uses a 53.9 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) pack paired with a rear-mounted 125 kW (167 hp) motor, delivering a CLTC range of 510 km (316 miles). The higher-specification variant uses a 64.2 kWh semi-solid manganese-based lithium-ion battery and a 150 kW (201 hp) rear motor, with a CLTC range of 530 km (330 miles). Both variants have rear-wheel drive and five-link independent rear suspension as standard.
The semi-solid-state cell uses a polymer-inorganic composite electrolyte developed in partnership with Shanghai-based QingTao Energy Development, in which SAIC holds a significant stake. The supporting production line at Anting completed full-process commissioning in late 2025. SAIC has stated that the cells contain approximately 5% liquid electrolyte content. The company conducted two needle-penetration tests in which the cells reportedly produced no smoke, fire or explosion across a two-hour observation period, with SAIC describing the result as exceeding industry standards by 20%.
The MG 4X measures 4,500 mm long, 1,849 mm wide and 1,621 mm tall, on a 2,735 mm wheelbase, positioning it close in size to the BYD Atto 3. Inside, the SUV features a 15.6-inch central infotainment display with 2.5K resolution alongside a smaller driver display, and an intelligent cockpit system developed jointly with smartphone manufacturer Oppo.
The same battery technology is confirmed for European launch by the end of 2026, where it will be marketed as MG SolidCore Battery. The European model, expected to be named MG4 EV Urban, will be offered with the same chemistry, with WLTP-cycle range likely to settle at around 400 km (248 miles). SAIC said the European-specification battery has been adapted to regional road conditions, climate variations and regulatory requirements.
SAIC Motor confirmed via the Shanghai Stock Exchange investor interaction platform on April 3 that it would progressively launch mass-production vehicles equipped with semi-solid-state batteries across its brands during 2026, while maintaining its target of full solid-state battery production by 2027.
The 4X joins an MG4 family that began deliveries of the semi-solid-state variant in China in December 2025. Other Chinese OEMs are moving in the same direction at different paces: GAC Group has completed China’s first large-capacity solid-state cell production line and is targeting mass output between 2027 and 2030; Chery has unveiled a module with an energy density of 600 Wh/kg targeting pilot vehicle use in 2027; and CATL has said full solid-state mass production is unlikely before around 2030.
Customers placing blind pre-orders are being offered up to 12,599 yuan (US$1,900) in benefits, plus an Oppo Watch X3 valued at 2,599 yuan (US$380).
