Samsung SDI has signed its first EV battery supply agreement with Mercedes-Benz, a multi-year deal to provide high-nickel NCM cells for next-generation compact and mid-size electric SUVs and coupes. The two companies also plan joint development of advanced battery technology as part of a broader strategic partnership.
Samsung SDI has signed a multi-year agreement with Mercedes-Benz to supply batteries for next-generation electric vehicles, representing the South Korean cell maker’s first EV battery supply contract with the German automaker.
The deal was formalized at a signing ceremony at the Andaz Seoul Gangnam Hotel, attended by Samsung SDI president and chief executive Joo Sun Choi and executive vice president and head of global sales Han Jae Cho. Mercedes-Benz was represented by group chairman Ola Källenius, chief technology officer Jörg Burzer, and Mercedes-Benz Korea chief executive Mathias Vaitl.
Under the agreement, Samsung SDI will supply high-nickel nickel, cobalt and manganese (NCM) battery cells incorporating the company’s proprietary safety systems. The chemistry is intended to deliver high energy density, extended driving range, long lifespan and high power output.
Mercedes-Benz plans to deploy the batteries across future compact and mid-size electric SUVs and coupe models as part of its next-generation EV strategy. The two companies have also agreed to broaden cooperation in future mobility, including joint development of next-generation battery technology.
“This partnership brings together the innovative DNA of both companies,” says a Samsung SDI spokesperson. “It is meaningful in that Samsung SDI has secured a battery order aimed at strengthening its position in the global EV market.”
