Hyundai unveils its new fuel cell SUV
Hyundai unveils its new fuel cell SUV

South Korean OEM Hyundai has introduced its latest hydrogen fuel cell SUV (FCEV). The Nexo SUV is the latest addition to Hyundai’s growing fuel cell portfolio as the company highlights its commitment to the production of low-emission vehicles.

Developed around a dedicated architecture, the Nexo offers 800km of range and 160ps – a 20% upgrade on its predecessor, the ix35. While cell capacity has been reduced from 100kW to 95kW, a 16kW increase in battery power means the Nexo will output 135kW compared to the ix35’s 124kW.

Torque has also been given an upgrade from 221 lb-ft to 291 lb-ft. This, in combination with a lower power-to-weight ratio means the new FCEV will reach 100km/h in 9.5 seconds. A three second improvement.

Addtionally, cold start issues have been addressed, with the OEM claiming cold start capability within 30 seconds.

“Hydrogen energy is the key to building a more sustainable society. Hyundai Motor Company has already taken a lead in hydrogen technology with the introduction of the ix35 fuel cell,” said Dr Woong-chul Yang, vice chairman at Hyundai.

As Hyundai’s second-generation of commercialized FCEV, the Nexo will act as the technological flagship for a growing range of electrified cars, with the auto maker aiming to introduce 18 EVs by 2025.
