Renault introduces new 80kW electric motor

French OEM Renault has introduced a new 80kW electric motor. Developed in just two years, the R110 will first feature in the 2018 Zoe and promises to shave two seconds off of its predecessors 80-120km/h time.

At lower speeds, the R110 will deliver the same stats as the R90 from which it is derived thanks to the instant availability of peak torque of 165 lb-ft.

The 80kW powerplant – which is 12kW more powerful than its predecessor despite being the same size – promises increased power and greater versatility when driving outside of urban areas.

“Thanks to this power boost, Zoe is even more responsive and versatile when used for journeys out of town,” says Elisabeth Delval, assistant director of the Renault Zoe program. “In addition to being able to enjoy the pleasure of driving a Zoe, drivers will also benefit from the longest range available for a mass-market electric car.”

The all-new Renault R110 is made in France at the auto maker’s Cléon plant in Normandy, and was designed by engineers working out of the Renault Technocentre, southwest of Paris, as well as in Cléon.

In addition to carrying over the R90’s energy efficiency, the R110 packs a combination of electrical machine- and power electronics-related innovations that have yielded an extra 12kW without increasing weight or volume.

The introduction of the R110 means there are now five variants of Renault motor available to the OEMs EV line-up: 44kW, 57kW, 60kW, 68kW and 80kW.
