The solid-state battery technology in Verge’s TS Pro motorcycle enables 370-mile range

Verge Motorcycles has become the first manufacturer to integrate solid-state battery technology into production motorcycles. Developed with Donut Lab, the technology enables 10-minute charging for 186 miles of range and up to 370 miles total range on the TS Pro model.

Verge Motorcycles has announced it will become the first manufacturer globally to deliver production motorcycles equipped with solid-state battery technology, representing a notable development in EV advancement. The company plans to begin delivering the technology to customers in the coming months through its updated TS Pro model.

The Finnish technology company and electric motorcycle manufacturer developed the battery technology in collaboration with Donut Lab. According to the companies, the solid-state batteries enable charging times of approximately 10 minutes to add 186 miles of range, with maximum range reaching up to 370 miles on a single charge when equipped with an extended-range battery pack.

“The use of solid state battery technology to motorcycles in production is a historic breakthrough shaking up the entire automotive industry,” said Tuomo Lehtimäki, CEO of Verge Motorcycles. He noted that development work with Donut Lab, including battery pack testing and validation, has reached the stage where the technology can be implemented in the new TS Pro model, which is currently in production.

Solid-state batteries utilize a solid electrolyte rather than the liquid or gel electrolytes found in conventional lithium-ion batteries. This construction is reported to provide improved safety and efficiency characteristics. While several major automotive manufacturers have been testing solid-state technology, broader adoption in production vehicles has been anticipated for the next decade.

The TS Pro model, unveiled at the EICMA motorcycle show in Milan last November, features several technical specifications beyond the battery system. The motorcycle incorporates a Donut 2.0 hubless in-wheel motor that is 50 percent lighter than its predecessor while maintaining equivalent power output and 737 pound-feet of torque. The vehicle accelerates from zero to 62 miles per hour in 3.5 seconds.

Ville Piippo, CTO of Donut Lab, indicated the technology has applications beyond motorcycles. “Donut Lab’s next-generation solid-state battery technology is a result of years of development work,” Piippo said, adding that the battery technology can be applied to various vehicle types including passenger cars, trucks, robotics, and stationary energy storage.

According to the companies, the solid-state batteries do not present fire risks associated with conventional lithium-ion batteries and maintain stable operation across varying temperatures. The batteries are constructed from globally abundant materials, and the technology is designed to last the lifetime of the motorcycle. Verge stated the battery upgrade does not affect the motorcycle’s pricing.
