GÖPEL electronic launches modular tester for battery cell quality checks

GÖPEL electronic's new modular tester checks up to five battery cells at once for safety, quality and reliability in seconds.

GÖPEL electronic has launched a modular battery cell tester that assesses quality, charging efficiency and reliability across up to five cells simultaneously. It performs OCV and ACIR safety tests and supports automated batch testing, complementing the company’s existing EOL battery test system.

GÖPEL electronic has developed a modular battery cell tester designed to give automotive suppliers and manufacturers a faster, more flexible way to carry out safety and functional testing of battery cells.

The tester can simultaneously assess quality, charging efficiency and reliability across up to five battery cells at once, according to the company. It is designed to complement GÖPEL electronic’s existing end-of-line (EOL) battery test system, which carries out test routines across an entire battery pack.

The company says high-voltage batteries for e-mobility have become increasingly complex systems, with new battery cell chemistries entering the market at a rapid pace. This has created demand among automotive suppliers and manufacturers for testing strategies that can be tailored to both development and production environments.

The new tester covers two standard safety tests used to evaluate cell condition. The first measures open circuit voltage (OCV), the voltage of a battery when no load is applied, which serves as an indicator of its state of charge. The second, alternating current internal resistance (ACIR) measurement, determines the internal resistance of a cell under alternating current, providing information on its performance, state of aging and overall quality.

According to GÖPEL electronic, the tester’s main advantage over previous versions is the speed and repeatability of its results. When interfaced with automated equipment, it can carry out batch testing in a matter of seconds, which the company says makes it suitable for applications such as incoming inspection or cell grouping.

The battery cell tester is now available from GÖPEL electronic.
