Magna has introduced the DHD REX, a single-motor dedicated hybrid drive for range-extended electric vehicles. The modular system supports electric, generating, and optional parallel hybrid modes across B- to E-segment AWD vehicles. It complements Magna’s existing DHD Duo dual-motor hybrid drive already in series production.

Magna, the Aurora, Ontario-headquartered automotive supplier, has introduced the DHD REX, a dedicated hybrid drive designed for range-extended electric vehicles (REEVs) that complements the company’s existing DHD Duo dual-motor system already in series production.

The DHD REX uses a single-motor architecture with a multi-mode design that supports pure electric driving, a generating mode for range extension, and an optional parallel hybrid mode for improved highway performance. Magna says the single-motor packaging reduces system cost and complexity compared to dual-motor alternatives.

The system is designed to scale across B- through E-segment vehicles in all-wheel-drive layouts, including SUVs, and can be adapted to both internal combustion engine (ICE)-based and battery electric vehicle (BEV) platforms. Magna describes it as a ready-to-integrate solution for automakers navigating varying regulatory and infrastructure conditions across global markets.

“Magna’s approach to electrification is centered on giving our customers flexible pathways forward,” says Diba Ilunga, president of Magna Powertrain. “DHD REX reflects our commitment to adaptable, customer-focused solutions that support a wide range of performance and market expectations.”

The modular, compact design is intended to simplify packaging for OEMs, while the multi-mode operation aims to maintain consistent drivability across driving scenarios.
